What is Pedorthics?
Pedorthics was developed in the 1950's. It is the design, manufacturing, modification, and fit of footwear to alleviate foot problems caused by disease, overuse, or injury. The term C.Ped is short for "Certified Pedorthist". A Pedorthist is a healthcare professional with specific training in footwear-which includes shoes, shoe modifications and orthotics to solve foot and lower limb problems.
Why do women (and men) love high heels?
Status: Long ago it was believed by adding inches to your height you could increase "status" in society.
Cosmetic: Women’s high heels create the optical illusion of shorter or smaller feet.
Sex appeal: High heels elongate legs, contours calf muscles, and push hips forward, which help to create a sexier stride.
How did shoe sizes begin?
A standardized measurement for distance was created by King Edward II of England in the 1300's by using 3 "barley corns" laid end to end; this was declared "one inch". 12 inches or 36 barleycorns became 1 foot.
Shoe sizes were an afterthought - A shoe size was then measured as 1/3" per size (or 1 barley corn), making 1/2 sizes for shoes only differentiate at 1/6".
So, for all of us who think an entire shoe size is 1 inch; it's actually only 1/3"
European sizes use a smaller scale one 1/4 inch (a half Euro size is only 1/8 inch)
Signs of Good Quality Footwear
Leather for leather shoes is a skin, therefore it breathes. It also adapts to varying temperatures, so it stays cool in warmer climates and warm in cooler climates.
Toe tips with a slight curve or lift off the ground (think of a genie's slipper with the upturned toe bed) will help to ensure a perfect step by allowing the big toe to flow and lift off of the ground comfortably.
High heels should balance on their own. A good way to test them is to place a shoe on a table before trying it on. If it wobbles or falls over, it's not going to be easy to walk in.
Shoes should flex and bend easily and comfortably just behind the ball of the foot without creating long stretch marks or creases
