Why do women (and men) love high heels?
Status - long ago it was believed by adding inches to your height was to increase "status" in societyCosmetic - creates an optical illusion of shorter or smaller feet
Sex appeal - elongates the leg, contours the calf muscles, and pushes the hips forward which helps to create a sexier stride
How did shoe sizes get started?
Originally a standardized measurement for distance was created by King Edward II of England in the 1300's by using 3 "barley corns" laid end to end; this was declared "one inch". 12 inches or 36 barleycorns became 1 foot.
- Shoe sizes were an aftertought - A shoe size was then measured as 1/3" per size (or 1 barley corn), making 1/2 sizes for shoes only differentiate at 1/6".
- So, for all of us who think an entire shoe size is 1 inch; it's actually only 1/3"
- European sizes use a smaller scale onle 1/4 inch (a hald Euro size is only 1/8 inch)
Signs of Good Quality Footwear
- Leather is a skin, therefore it breathes, it also adapts to temperature stays cool in warmer climates & stays warm in cooler climates
- Heel counter (the back of the shoe or heel cup) should be hard or sturdy to keep the heel stable and prevent the shoe from wearing down on the sides or back
- Toe tips with a slight curve or lift off the group (think of a genie's slipper with the upturned toed) will help to ensure a perfect step by allowing the bug toe to flow and lift off of the ground comfortably
- High heels that balance on their own - a good test is to place a shoe on a table before trying it on, if it wobbles or falls over - it's not going to be easy to walk in
- A shoe should flex and bend easily and comfortably just behind the ball of the foot without creating long stretch marks or creases
